Project 2: Room and Narrative

Painting chosen:

Edward Hopper: City of Sunlight
analysis of painting:
woman being isolated in city, might be in a hotel
(close to neighborhood's window, suggested she is living in a high density living environment,
ie. city
and neighbors are blacked out in painting, ie. isolated physically
she is alone by herself, ie. isolated spiritually)

Narrative developed: a woman who is isolated either physically or spiritually, loves to
think, maybe thinking about the future or problems that she might have now; thus, she
loves to read books as she would like to find any answers towards her problems encountered
in her life.

Narrative transformed into design:
1. a room that is located in a remote area [isolated]
2. and is bounded by timber (because she is also in a high density living environment originally)
3. she should be surrounded by books (she just has a small desk to read and others are just book
shelves)
4. book shelves are lofted up a level to emphasis that she is surrounded by books
5. also entrance into the room is stepped down from outside, so as to emphasis that she has
entered into her own world
6. other than book shelves, seatings are also be made in between for the character to sit beside
and think about anything while she is reading
7. more windows are located at one side of the room to represent the area that she is thinking and looking into her future
8. a large window seating is designed for her to read under the sun; lifting and sliding casement
windows are used so she could shut herself off more when she wants to be isolated from the
outside
9. the other side of the room is to emphasis the down side of the life which she is by herself, with
little windows and concrete walls to show the coldness in her life; seatings are made for her
to read and find answers for herself
